Use the changeover to test each entry and decide what needs rekeying, repair, or replacement.
Check who still has a key
Before a new tenant moves in, check whether anyone else may still have a working key to the exterior doors.
Rekeying the existing locks is often the simplest answer. If the hardware is worn out or does not provide the security the property needs, replacement may make more sense.
Test each door, lock, and latch
Walk the exterior doors, including any garage, gate, or storage entry the tenant will use. Note locks that stick, latches that miss, missing keys, and any security devices that need attention.
Then decide what can be rekeyed, what needs repair, and whether any hardware needs replacing.
Fix what is needed, not everything
There is no identical lock checklist for every rental. A sound lock may only need a new key; a door that will not latch needs a different fix.
Check the condition of the hardware before deciding to replace it.
