Rekey and lock upgrade guidance for North Texas homeowners.
A new home, a lost key or a change in who has access often raises the same question: should the locks be rekeyed or replaced? The answer depends on the key history, condition of the hardware and the level of security the door needs.
What rekeying changes
Old keys stop working after the internal pin configuration is changed.
The existing lock hardware stays on the door when it is still in good condition.
A new key is cut to match the reconfigured cylinder.
Compatible locks can often be configured to work with one key.
Rekeying changes access; it does not repair a damaged lock or reinforce a weak door.
When to rekey
Rekey after a purchase, tenant or staff change, or lost key when you need previous copies to stop working.
The last owner may have given a key to a neighbor, cleaner, or contractor. You don’t have to track every copy down; a rekey makes them useless on the locks we change.
Rekey or replace?
Rekey when the hardware works well and you simply need old keys to stop working.
Repair or replace worn or unreliable hardware. Replace it when it cannot be repaired or does not support the access features you need.
Upgrade when the door or frame needs reinforcement beyond a new key or cylinder.
If you are unsure, have the lock, door, and frame checked before buying new hardware.
Think beyond the front door
Back, side, garage, gate, and storage locks may also need attention when keys are lost or occupants change. Check the whole property before deciding which locks to rekey.
If the locks are sound, ask which doors can share a key and whether our high-security rekey option fits. Its upgraded pinning adds pick and bump resistance on compatible cylinders; it won’t fix a weak door or control who copies the new key.
