Smart Locks
Why Is My Smart Lock Not Working?
Separate a smart-lock power problem from a jam, rejected code, or app connection issue. Start with simple checks before resetting the lock.
“Not working” can mean no power, a bolt that jams, a rejected code, or an app that cannot connect. Identify which part still works before replacing batteries, changing settings, or resetting anything.
What you may be noticing
The keypad stays dark, the lock beeps without moving, or the motor starts and stops. Another common problem is an app showing offline even though a saved code still opens the door. These are different symptoms, so they deserve different checks.
Keep a working backup way into the home while troubleshooting. Do not test changes by locking yourself outside.
Common causes
A depleted battery set or a battery pack that is not seated properly can affect power. A bolt pressing against the frame can make the motor struggle. A code can fail because it was entered incorrectly, removed, or limited to a schedule.
An app-only problem may involve the phone, account, router, or connection required by that particular lock. Electronic keypads are not all Wi-Fi locks, and not every smart lock uses the same app.
Things you can safely check
Write down the model name and what fails: keypad, bolt movement, code acceptance, or remote access. Photograph the error screen without sharing access codes.
If power is the issue, follow the battery instructions for that model. Replace the full set together with the specified type and check polarity. Do not mix old and new batteries.
With safe access and the door open, try normal locking once. If it works open but jams closed, investigate alignment before repeating motor cycles.
For an app-only issue, check whether the phone has a connection and you are signed into the correct account. Check the router separately before removing the lock from your account.
If contacts are damaged, batteries have leaked, or the hardware smells hot, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a locksmith. Do not open the electronics or guess at wiring changes.
Blue Key tip
A reset can erase useful settings without fixing a physical jam. Tell us the exact error and whether the keypad still works locally. That often makes the next step much clearer.
For model-specific help, read Schlage Encode help or Kwikset Halo help. For rubbing hardware, start with the deadbolt alignment checks.
